The federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is one of the granddaddies of all collection laws. It is both broad and very specific in what it requires and prohibits collectors from doing. It contains rules that are obvious and rules that are surprising. Although it does not directly apply to all collectors, every consumer debt collector and everyone who supervises consumer debt collectors should have a good understanding of it.
The federal Consumer Financial Protection Act is a more recent entry into the world of collections law, more broadly prohibits "unfair, deceptive and abusive acts and practices" (UDAAP), and is equally (if not more) important to consumer debt collectors.
