As the end of the year draws near, it's time to start thinking about tax filings—including 1099-C and 1099-A reporting. Neither is difficult (especially after changes made to 1099-C rules a few years ago), but there are misunderstandings about both and both have potential pitfalls that can have nasty consequences if you aren't careful or don't know what you're doing.
During this program, you will learn:
- What the difference is between IRS Forms 1099-C and 1099-A, and when you are required to file each.
- Whether you may (and whether you ever should) voluntarily file a 1099-C.
- Exactly which circumstances require the filing of a 1099-C ("Cancellation of Debt")
- The exceptions that allow you to skip some 1099-C reports
- Exactly which circumstances require the filing of an IRS Form 1099-A ("Acquisition or Abandonment of Secured Property"), and when it should be filed in addition to a 1099-C
- The major areas of litigation involving 1099-C reporting over the past few years, how to respond if your financial institution becomes involved, and how to avoid disputes in the first place.
- What courts have to say about whether the filing of a 1099-C automatically cancels an otherwise collectible debt and prohibits you from further efforts to collect
- Whether filing of a 1099-C serves to extinguish a lien on real or personal property
- How 1099-C or 1099-A filing may affect your obligations under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
- Whether you may, and whether you must, tell a consumer before filing a 1099-C, and what risks should make you careful.
The program will be held live on November 5. As always, registration for the live program carries with it the right to watch the archived recording for at least six months.

Cost/Registration
Until the program begins, the fee to attend is $175.00
if paid by credit card or $185.00 if paid by check. For that fee, you and others from your financial institution may view the live program (from one computer) AND the
archived program as often as you like for a period of 180 days.
After the live program has ended, the fee to register for and watch the archived program will be $190.00
Handout Materials
Handout materials will be made available in PDF the day before or morning of the program. When they are ready, an email will be sent to all registered participants and a link will appear on the right-hand side of the page at northlegal.com.
