About the Advanced Bankruptcy Conference

June 11-14, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada

The purpose of the NorthLegal Advanced Bankruptcy Conference is to help those who already have a firm understanding of consumer bankruptcy law to move to "the next level," both by exploring more complex rules and by applying and testing their knowledge against real life situations.

The Advanced Bankruptcy Conference is not a "general overview" program that touches on dozens of topics but explains none clearly; the conference will provide participants with, in a logical order, specific, detailed, and understandable information and strategies you need to analyze Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy filings, to comply with bankruptcy law requirements, and to aggressively act to protect your financial institution's interests to the extent bankruptcy law allows. Like other NorthLegal Conferences, the Advanced Bankruptcy Conference focuses not only on the law, but on how the law applies to your specific day-to-day business choices and practices. Conference participants will learn about and discuss:

See below for a detailed list of topics to be covered during the conference.

Prerequisites

Participants at the NorthLegal Advanced Bankruptcy Conference should already have a working knowledge of basic bankruptcy concepts, including where bankruptcy law comes from, how the court system works, what important bankruptcy terms (like "petition," "schedules," "discharge," "the "automatic stay" and "341 meeting"), where to get information about a bankruptcy case, what the trustee does, and what the differences are between the various types of bankruptcy (most importantly, Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy). Although these issues may be touched upon, the Advanced Bankruptcy Conference will not focus on them but will move on to more complex subjects.

In order to help participants benefit the most from the Advanced Bankruptcy Conference, those attending the conference may also attend the "Bankruptcy Fundamentals Seminar" the preceding Monday at that same location without charge! Although attendance at the Monday seminar is not required, all conference participants—regardless of experience level—are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to refresh their recollection about fundamental issues and set themselves up to get the very most from the Advanced Bankruptcy Conference the rest of the week!

Participants must be employees of consumer lending institutions such as banks, credit unions or automobile finance lenders, or financial institution agents such as attorneys or collection agencies.

Topics Covered

A strict scheduled "agenda" is not available in advance of the program, because the speaker believes participants benefit from the ability to cover some topics as they arise. However, the following topics, among others, will be covered in detail during the three-and-a-half day conference:

» Debtor Protection During and After Bankruptcy

» Handling Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Cases

» Handling Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Cases

» Controversial Issues.

Course Materials

Each participant will receive one free pass to attend the prerecorded online NorthLegal Webinars "BK 101: An Introduction to Bankruptcy" and "BK 102: The Automatic Stay" during the week prior to the time the program begins to help participants check and refresh their knowledge prior to the program.

At the conference, each participant will receive extensive handout materials that outline, discuss, and analyze bankruptcy law as it pertains to consumer lending. Although these course materials are not intended to serve as a "stand alone book" (in fact, they are not sold to those who do not attend the conference), many conference participants have told us they use the course materials as a reference guide to assist them in handling cases throughout the year.

Speakers

The primary speaker for the conference is Eric North. Eric is a practicing attorney who has devoted his legal practice to representing the interests of consumer lending institutions for more than thirty years.

Prior to beginning the practice of law, Eric worked within various financial institutions in lending, collections, and operations departments, and managed several of those institutions. This experience allows Eric to bring practical, as well as "legal" information to those who attend his programs.

In addition to practicing law, Eric dedicates a significant portion of his time each year to the training of hundreds of consumer credit professionals throughout the United States through local programs presented on behalf of state and national trade associations, through monthly NorthLegal Webinars, and through the annual NorthLegal Consumer Collections Conference and this Advanced Bankruptcy Conference.

It is anticipated there may be one or more guest speakers at the conference, although that is not for certain. Further information will be posted here as it becomes available.
